KB10017: What Is the Commodore 64 Ultimate?

The Commodore 64 Ultimate (C64U) is the first new Commodore computer in over 30 years, produced by Commodore International Corporation—the current owner of all 47 surviving original Commodore trademarks. It is not an emulator, not a PC in a retro case, and not a software-based clone. It is a new hardware product built around an FPGA recreation of the original Commodore 64 motherboard.

Background

Commodore went dark in 1994 when the original company folded. In the decades that followed, the brand changed hands multiple times without producing any real hardware. In July 2025, Commodore International Corporation completed its full acquisition of the Commodore brand and intellectual property, signing final papers in the Netherlands. The C64 Ultimate is their first product: a machine that aims to bridge the original Commodore 64 experience with modern conveniences.

Not an Emulator

The critical distinction with the C64U is that it runs on an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) that recreates the original Commodore 64 hardware at the chip level. Unlike software emulators, which interpret instructions on modern processors, an FPGA physically reconfigures its logic gates to behave like the original silicon. This means timing, compatibility, and behavior should match the original hardware far more closely than any emulator can achieve. Who Makes It

The C64U is made by Commodore International Corporation, which positions itself as a continuation of Jack Tramiel’s original vision: computers for the masses, not the classes.
