KB10001: Commodore VIC-20 and C64 Overview
VIC-20
The VIC-20 was Commodore's first color home computer, released in 1981. It used a 6502 processor at about 1 MHz, 5 KB of RAM (expandable via cartridges), and 20 KB of ROM containing BASIC and system software. The machine connected to a TV and supported 22x23 text and 176x184 graphics. Three distinct production runs exist: early units with a PET-style keyboard, mid-run models with a C64-style keyboard and silver/rainbow labeling, and later units with board revisions that changed RAM chip layout. The VIC-20 was sold as the VC-20 in German markets and VIC-1001 in Japan.
Commodore 64
The C64 followed in 1982 and became one of the best-selling computers of all time. It retained the 6502 CPU but doubled the clock in some modes, included 64 KB RAM, and added the SID sound chip and VIC-II graphics. Numerous motherboard revisions exist across the production lifespan—early "breadbox" cases, the slim C64C, and the SX portable—each with different power requirements and failure modes. The internal power supply is a frequent failure point; many restorers replace it with an external unit to avoid further damage.
Common Restoration Notes
Both systems use electrolytic capacitors that age and often need replacement. The C64 PLA chip is another common failure. Keyboard membranes and switch contacts can degrade. Case yellowing (bromine in the plastic) is common and can be addressed with retrobrite treatments, though results vary. Always verify power supply output before connecting to a unit; bad voltage can damage chips quickly.
